Beer Review Australian Ale from Bridge Road Brewers.

This beer review is for, quite simply, a seriously good beer.

“Australian Ale” by the good people at Bridge Road Brewers in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia.

A simple yet tasty Ale, it’s like there’s a party in my mouth, and everyone is invited.

According to the label, “this Aussie Ale is Bridge Road’s original beer.  A great introduction to the craft brew scene,  this pale coloured ale has balanced malt and hop characters – a real session beer”.

Now, I’m not sure what or where the craft brew scene is – it doesn’t appear to be very close to my house anyway – but I can see/taste that as far as beer sessions are concerned, Australian Ale could be a welcome guest.

The Bridge Road Brewers website sums it up much better than I can:

“  Australian Ale is a beer style that can trace its roots back to English style Pale Ales.  The Aussie version developed into a style that better suits our warm climate, though not bland and still holding its own in the character department.  Traditonal Australian styled ales had all but been forgotten since the advent of lagers.  Thankfully, however this beer style is enjoying a revival.  Bridge Road’s “Aussie Ale”, as it is affectionately know by the locals, is a true “session beer”.  We hope you enjoy our Aussie Ale as much as the locals do!

Beechworth is approx 3 hours drive north east from Melbourne, Australia.  It has some very interesting gold rush history from the 1850’s.  Beechworth is also well known for being a hang out of the famous Australian bushranger, Ned Kelly, who robbed a bank or two, and may have shot a police-man or two as while he was there.

The label has a Ned Kelly-esque theme, with the Australian star constellation known as the Southern Cross too.

When Ned Kelly was eventaully caught and hung at the Old Melbourne Goal his last words were recorded as “Such is life”.  If he had access to this fantastic beer, he may well have uttered the quote on the label instead….

“Such is Beer”.

This humble beer review type person gives Australian Ale several big thumbs up and at least a 9.5 out of 10 on the Forty Beers Cheers O Meter.

My only regret is that my friends – Simon, Phoebe and Chris – who gave me these beers for my birthday only appear to have given me one and not the multiple dozen that I think I would enjoy.  Maybe next birthday….. (hint, hint).

Thanks,

Matthew

Beechworth – legendary place for booze right now. Giaconda and Savaterre doing amazing things with the grape, and now you tell us that Bridge Road are doing awesome beers. I will visit them next week while I’m up there based on your review! Sounds yum!
