As mentioned on the Basic Homebrew Recipe post, making beer can be as easy or as complex as you like.

Personally, I prefer the easier options – buy the premade “beer kit” in a can, add sugar, water, some other bits and pieces, wait, bottle, wait some more, drink beer.

Here is another “beer kit” homebrew recipe – based on the Coopers Dark Ale.

Ingredients :

  • 1 can Coopers Dark Ale kit.
  • 1 kilogram Coopers Brew Enhancer .

Optional Ingredients (one or more of these can be used)  :

  • 1-2 teaspoons Ground Cinnamon.
  • 1-2 tablespoons Grated Ginger Root ( a 2 cm piece will do the trick).

Method:

(Note – Don’t forget to sterilise everything first !)

Step 1   Dissolve Dark Ale and Brew Enhancer in 2 liters of hot water in your fermenter/barrel.

Step 2   Add to this solution one or more of the optional ingredients.  This concentrated mixture is known as the “wort”.

Step 3   Add cold water to the wort until it reaches the 23 litre mark, and stir vigorously.

Step 4   With wort temperature between 21-27 C, sprinkle yeast over the surface and mix in.

Step 5   Allow your beer to ferment – allow a week, maybe up to 10 days, depending on the room temperature.

Step 6   When two readings on your hydrometer (a little floating device that looks like a thermometer) are the same over 24 hours, strain out solid ingredients.

Step 7   Bottle your homemade beer.  Don’t forget to sterilise each and every beer bottle, and add a teaspoon of sure to each bottle.

Step 8   Leave the bottles upright for more than six weeks.

Step 9   Chill, then drink.

Step 10   Repeat as necessary.

Note :

As far as the optional ingredients are concerned, a friend of a friend has told me that he often throws in one whole piece of fruit into many of his homebrew beers – an apple, an orange, a peach, a banana, etc – peel and all after the stiring mentioned in Step 3.
